Chinese wedding reception tradition?

I’ll be going to a wedding in NYC next week. The bride is Chinese, and her parents have paid for the reception. I’ve been informed by my cousin (the groom) that they’re asking for $50 per person at the reception which is to be placed in a red envelope that will be on the table and that this is Chinese tradition. Is this really Chinese tradition or are they just being greedy? We’ll have two adults, three young children and two teenagers, one being vegetarian and probably won’t eat more than the 5-year-old…
